Counting Methodology – Simple as A, B, C
In 2007, MedGarde began implementing the visual black character (VBC) counting method as recommended by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA). The AHIMA and MTIA both endorse the VBC method because of the transparency it offers. Under the VBC method, only visible black characters are counted – the characters that can be seen with the naked eye. Non-printing characters such as spaces and hard returns are not counted because they’re not visible with the naked eye. The VBC method is easily tracked without any third party counting technology. Once the total number of characters (A) is determined using pen and paper or Microsoft Word’s counting feature, that number is then multiplied by the per character rate (B) to determine the price (C) of the document. Simply put, AxB=C.
Traditionally, there are several other methods used to bill for transcription services. These methods include billing by the line, page, word, minute of dictation, etc. MedGarde can work with clients wishing to use nearly any billing method. Regardless of the method agreed to, clients can rest assured that MedGarde’s billing methods are verifiable, definable, measurable, consistent, honest and placed in writing.
